The ecological impact of Fast Fashion
The pollution caused by Fast Fashion is silently but substantially impacting the environment. The term “Fast Fashion” refers to cheap and trendy clothes that are mass-produced and rushed to shops to meet the latest fad, which makes a wider range of clothing styles available to the average consumer. The designs are constantly changing and are very cheap, which increases sales thus increasing production. Furthermore, these clothes are made of poor-quality materials that are quickly worn down, which creates a need for them to be replaced at a low price as well. This altogether produces a large amount of clothing waste and pollution, being the modern fashion industry responsible for more annual carbon emissions than all marine shipping and international flights combined. Additionally, a 50% increase in greenhouse gas emissions is expected in the next ten years if said industry maintains this exploitative business model. Fast Fashion is not sustainable, it has already caused a severe amount of damage to the environment and it will keep doing so unless the demand and production rates decrease.
