I think that one of the biggest mistakes I’ve ever made was not standing up for myself when my parents made me sign up for a degree in Mathematics and Computer Engineering.
I’ve loved the English language since I was a kid, and by the age of 15 I already knew that I wanted to study something related to it. That is why I wanted to take literature studies in highschool, but my parents said I was “too smart for that” and forced me to keep studying sciences. Mathematics was the subject I was the best at, and so that’s what I chose to study among the degrees that they approved. It was an awful choice to get into Maths plus CompSci, because had I only chosen Mathematics they would have easily noticed how awful I was at them, but since I was also taking Computer Science and I was kind of good at it, even though I didn’t like it, they just thought I was being lazy and pushed me to keep studying something that I hated.
It has taken me two long years to convince them that English Studies is my true passion, and now that they’ve started to be supportive of it I feel like I’m entering a brighter stage in my life.
