It’s hard for me to choose one single favourite food. My mom’s cooking is delicious, and having to choose her best dish would result in a tie between dozens. That’s why I’m only going to talk about my favourite dish that I can cook without burning my house to the ground, and that is fried rice.
The first thing you’ll do is to pop one of those supermarket rice cups in the microwave. While it cooks, you can prepare the rest. Peel and dice a small carrot, then dice (or cut it into stripes, or whatever fits you best) some ham (or hotdogs, if you forgot to buy the ham). Separate to this, beat an egg until it foams and then add to it a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of milk.
Now’s the time to get your pan, add a bit of olive oil and heat it to the maximum. You’re going to take the egg and cook an omelette, but right before it’s done you’re going to use your spatula to break it and make it look kind of like scrambled eggs. Then add the carrots and ham to the pan. Once they seem cooked, you’re going to empty the rice cup on the pan with a teaspoon of soy sauce. Stir everything on low heat for two to three minutes, and there you go.
My recipe for fried rice is very loosely based on Chinese fried rice, but with my own twist to it. This takes like ten minutes to cook, it is super cheap and it tastes like heaven, which makes it perfect for broke college students.
